News from the last year. Contests and agents, and book deals, oh my!

It's hard to believe it has been a year since my last post... so much for my New Year's Resolution of blogging more!

But it has been quite a roller coaster of a year for me! The short version is writing new books, participating in Pitch to Publication, querying, reading, traveling, getting an agent, and getting a book deal. You want the long version you say? Well sit back, relax, maybe grab a snack, and read on. (I'm a writer, this may get lengthy.)

It all started in the beginning of 2015... Actually, I don't even remember much about the beginning of 2015. It seems like so long ago... My personal life included a lot of travelling as usual. I think I went to something like 10 states, 2 countries, 3 islands, and Disney World.

Me in Disney World:

As far as writing, I know I did a lot of revising on BLUE TIDE and decided it was time to submit to agents. I entered a few writing contest, #PitMad, PitchWars, Pitch to Publication. Some I didn't get into but one I did: Pitch to Publication. Pitch to Publication is a writing contest for completed manuscripts who submit their query + 5 pages to one of 15 highly sought-after freelance editors. The editors select one (in rare cases, two) authors to work with! The writer/editor team work closely for a month, getting the manuscript as polished as possible. After the editing round, the entries go to the agent round!! Agents then can make full manuscript requests on any of the entries they choose. Out of all the entries, BLUE TIDE was chosen by editor Lara Williard. (She is an awesome editor and I love her blog about writing.)  After a month of intensive edits with Lara and her other mentee, Joe. BLUE TIDE was as polished as I'd ever hoped it could be. It was finally ready for the agent round.

I was lucky to have a few requests from the agent round. After months (years) of hard work, it was utterly surreal to see agents requesting to read BLUE TIDE. One of the agents, Rebecca Angus, only requested two manuscripts from all of the amazing entries. One of those requests was mine, I sent it over to her right away. But then I waited. And waited. And waited. Maybe broke down and had a peek at her Twitter, where everything she tweeted could have been about BLUE TIDE.

Like this tweet...

But shortly after that Tweet she followed me on Twitter...

And then the next morning I woke up to an email with the subject line "Offer of rep"where she said she pulled an all-nighter to finish BLUE TIDE because she couldn't stop reading, and that she wants to have "The Call" with me but wanted to put her hat in the ring ASAP because she had the feeling once I inform other agents that I have an offer, that I would get other offers as well and that she was prepared to arm wrestle other agents for my manuscript.

So we scheduled a call the next day, where it was everything I thought it would be. Our vision for BLUE TIDE was identical and she didn't want to change a thing. I really clicked with her and wanted to give her a YES right then and there. I gave the other agents that had my full the customary time frame but ultimately, I signed with Rebecca!

Rebecca has been my dream agent from the start. She is so quick to get back to me about things and was there every step of the way through the nerve racking submission process... which leads us to the next chapter of our story....

This is where we get to the roller coaster of the story! After signing with Rebecca, we did some (more) minor edits on BLUE TIDE then she prepped it for submission. In November, BLUE TIDE was sent off to publishers. Everything happened in a blur. We got a lot of awesome responses very quickly... but then the waiting set it. And then the holidays where the publishing world seemed to stand still. But then in February, we were offered an amazing three book deal. I am proud to announce, BLUE TIDE will be released Winter 2017. A prequel novella will be released sometime before that and the sequel to BLUE TIDE will be TBD. I was pleasantly surprised my publisher wanted a sequel to BLUE TIDE. I originally wrote it as a stand alone (though it did have series potential) so I am very excited to be able to remain in Lux and Draven's world a little longer.

I cannot wait to share BLUE TIDE with everyone. It is has been my baby and I hope you like it as much as I do!

I can't thank everyone enough. My readers, beta-readers, friends, critique partners, bloggers, editor, agent, anyone who has supported me.... for making my dream a reality. As we speak, there is a ton of exciting BLUE TIDE stuff happening that I can't wait to share with you. Be sure to sign up for my mailing list to stay up to date. You can also join my "Crew" if you really want to support me and be in the know. I will also be going on tour BLUE TIDE after the release. New Release! Dethroning Crown by Lila Felix, plus an interview!

Hey y’all! Welcome to my tour stop for the book tour for author Lila Felix’s Dethroning Crown. This is my first time participating in another author’s book tour but I fell in love with the cover and title. Plus, Lila Felix will also be at the New Orlean’s book convention DitterCon with me. I thought this would be a great way to get to know her before we met! Lila is also from Louisiana so in honor of that, this interview will have only NOLA –inspired questions.
Lila:   First of all, thank you so much for being on the tour!
Jenna: You are so welcome! I'm very excited to be a part of it!

Jenna:     Have you lived in Louisiana your whole life?
Lila:        I was born in Baton Rouge at a hospital that my dad actually helped build. I lived in Denham Springs and Baton Rouge until I was sixteen when we moved to Los Angeles, California. What a change that was. It turned out that this Coonass girl was a fish out of water and when I was nineteen, I moved back on my own.
Jenna: You can take the girl out of Louisiana but you can't take Lousiana outta the girl. ;)

Jenna:       Where were you when Hurricane Katrina hit?
Lila:       When Katrina hit, my husband, kids, and I were all at home. We hunkered down in place. We were out of electricity for eleven days.
Jenna:    I love hearing everyone's Katrina story.
Jenna:       Chocolate Milk or a Café Au lait with your beignets?
Lila:         Café Au Lait, hands down, cher.

Jenna:       What are you dressing up as for Halloween?
Lila:        Nothing. We don’t really celebrate Halloween. But if we did, I would be one of the characters from American Horror Story, Freak Show.

Jenna:      What is your favorite flavor of SnoBalls?
Lila:        Blackberry with cream. All the time. If that’s out, wedding cake.
Jenna:   I will have to try blackberry with cream next time! I love wedding cake though, that's a classic. Also: Nectar with cream, Ice Cream with cream, and King Cake with cream. Can you tell I like cream?

Jenna:      What is your favorite food to eat while in NOLA?
Lila:           Willy May’s fried chicken.

Jenna:       If you were wandering Bourbon Street late at night, who would you rather run in to: Marcel or Klaus?
Lila:         Klaus, Klaus, and Klaus. Did I say Klaus?
Jenna:    Ah, I knew I'd like you!

I hope y'all enjoyed getting to know Lila better, I know I did! See below for the beautiful cover, stalking links, and summary!

Dethroning Crown

By Lila Felix
Release Date: October 10, 2014

Number ten is plastered on his team jersey and on his ego. In his own mind, Crown Sterling is the shit. He dates the prettiest women, he dominates on the soccer field, he pours money out of his pockets like it’s water. Until a debilitating knee injury puts him out of commission on and off the field. He’s sent to an isolated town in Louisiana to recoup, undergo physical therapy and heal. But it’s when you’re down that you find out who your real friends are, and what they value in you, if anything at all.
All Lyra wants out of life is peace and quiet. She grew up with a regular, everyday family. When she turned sixteen, rummaging through her grandmother’s hope chest in the attic, she discovered a secret that would turn her simple, normal life into a ball of chaos that revolved around her. But while she seems to face her fears head on in her career, she lives a life that’s secure and well hidden.
A new neighbor moved in next door and he’s decided that everyone needs to listen to his rap music, shattering Lyra’s quiet existence. Enraged, she stomps to the next townhouse over and who should open the door but a man whose good looks and charming smile knock her breathless.
How good looking? Just ask him.
How charming? He’ll tell you that too.
The king must be dethroned.
And a small town girl who’s been through hell is just the one to do it.

"Getting to Know You" Blog Hop

I’m participating in the Getting to Know You blog hop from April 18-April hosted by Kristina Perez and Rhiann Wynn-Nolet. This is for a really fun contest I’m participating in for my new YA.

  1. What’s the first thing you do when you begin writing for the day?
I read the last chapter of where I left off. I try to not to do too much editing and revising when I’m writing but I’d like to be put right back in the scene!

  1. Who’s the first writer who truly inspired you to become a writer?
That is a really hard one mainly because I don’t remember! I always loved writing, so it’s been something I’ve wanted since I was a little girl. I only wish I remember every book that influenced me back then, there were just so many!

  1. Did the final revision of your first book have the same first chapter it started with?
No, actually! I first started the book by dumping the reader in mid-scene but as revising went on, the beginning I have now just fit better. The reader is still jumping right into the action; just a little bit more is revealed.

  1. For your first book, which came first: major characters, plot or setting?
Characters!! It’s always been about the characters for me. They are what write the story for me. My next book is a NA and I already am *plotting* the plot and the characters are slowly coming together so that’s different for me!

  1. What’s the first word you want to roll off the tip of someone’s tongue when they think of your writing?
Ohh, that’s a tough one. Great voice? Wait, that’s two words!

Well, that was fun!! If you are participating in this blog hop, post below and I’ll be sure to check out your answers as well.
